The story of the small family restaurant begins in 2003, since then, we have been sharing small tasty secrets and traditional food with our customers, as well as the most delicious recipes of Santorini cuisine, with the freshest ingredients, the unique local wines, our good mood and our smile in a welcoming, calm and relaxed environment reminiscent of a Cycladic Island courtyard where we serve recipes made with passion and great culinary experience.

The Name

The Name of Our Restaurant

The name of our Restaurant comes from the flower of Zafora (Crocus) with its yellow and red stamens. This flower has been characterized as a superfood with magical properties both for food and for the good physiological condition of the human body.

This dried flower gives aroma, taste and an enchanting color to food.

Τhis plant is not cultivated on the island of Santorini, but it grows alone on a small mountain of Akrotiri village and every November it is collected by local residents.

What is Zafora?

The word Zafora and Saffron are derived from the Arabic word “zafaran”.
Saffron is the stigma of the saffron plant flower (known as the “saffron crocus”) and is an extra special natural product.

Some of the local residents of Akrotiri continue to collecting this flower to produse after drying method the Crocus (Zafora Herb), which they use it from the old days even today in many foods for its taste and its distinct aroma.

Each flower includes three small red stigmas that are hand-picked and then dried to make the saffron spice, known for its distinct flavor in food and many good beneficial for human health!

This plant thrives in some areas of Akrotiri village and is not cultivated, we simply collect it in the winter months and use it in our restaurant recipes!

The presence of this plant in the area dates back thousands of years since we can see frescoes of Akrotiri crocus (Saffron) collectors in the Museums of Santorini dating from the 16th century BC.
